Pontine Islands (Lazio, Italy)
Ponza - Palmarola - Ventotene - Santo Stefano - Zannone - Gavi
The island of Ponza is the largest of the Pontine Islands and together with Palmarola -another pearl of the Tyrrhenian Sea-, Zannone -uninhabited island- and Gavi -like Palmarola, inhabited only in high season- form the municipality of Ponza.
Volcanic like all the Pontine Islands, Ventotene owes much of its notoriety to the Protected Marine Area of Ponente that is accessible even by non-expert divers. Like Zannone, Santo Stefano also is uninhabited at the moment, but you can reach it by boat anyway.
Have you ever heard about the sickle-shaped Chiaia di Luna? It is the most famous seaside of the island: you can’t miss it! Another peculiar location we suggest you to visit is Cala Inferno whose rocks are totally white despite of its name. You will be astonished for the contrasts of colour. And when the night comes, taste the local restaurants and their fish specialties.
Palmarola Just 8 miles far from Ponza, Palmarola is a sort of vegetable garden en plein air. In fact almost every citizen from Ponza owns one in this island.
Ventotene If you like diving, don’t miss out Punta Ascone, Punta dell’Arco, the wreck of Santa Lucia and Secca dell’Archetto.
Santo Stefano A wild island holding the historic 18th century jail of the same name.
Zannone A desert island famous for its history of scandals in the seventies.
Gavi Only 120 meters far from Ponza, this is the smallest Pontine island totally without shores and mostly populated by lizards.
